APTC repayment calculator

Estimate whether a Marketplace household could owe back part of its advance premium tax credit (APTC) at tax time, using the same Form 8962 engine that runs inside Chronos. Compare the expected income with a higher one before you finalize the application.

How it works

Enter the plan numbers

Read the estimate

The calculator reconciles the year like Form 8962: allowed credit, advance credit received, the repayment cap for the tax year, and what could be repaid or refunded.

Inside Chronos: saved scenarios per client, month-by-month premiums, income sensitivity, and a PDF for the client file.

Questions

What is APTC repayment?

When a household takes the premium tax credit in advance and its final income is higher than estimated, the advance amount can be larger than the credit it is allowed. The difference (excess APTC) is reconciled on Form 8962 and may have to be repaid, subject to the rules for that tax year.

Which tax years does it cover?

Tax years 2025, 2026 and 2027. Each year uses its own poverty guidelines, applicable percentages and repayment rules; years whose rules are not final are marked provisional in Chronos.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is an educational estimate based on the numbers entered. The final amount is decided on the tax return.

Why is there a limit of 3 searches?

The free tools allow 3 searches per day without an account. A free Chronos account removes the limit and lets you save scenarios on the client record.
